Another Day Another Beach

On our travels we have been pretty much from on end of Te Waewae Bay to the other.  This is the view from Monkey Island Beach.   A "monkey winch" was used to haul boats ashore and it is presumed that this is the reason it is called Monkey Island. (Thanks to Google)  It has a much prettier Maori name, Te Puka o Takitimu, or anchor stone of the legendary  Takitimu waka (canoe) that was wrecked in the bay.  The next beach was Colac Bay or Oraka.  Here the forester collected seaweed for his pampered asparagus beds back home.   I took photos of the cormorants, (extra)
Our final stop for the day was Riverton/Apirima.  It has an excellent small museum.  It was one of the areas where early European settlers and Maori met and traded and intermarried.  In the third extra you can see the river mouth where they brought their boats through.
We had an excellent late lunch at a beach front cafe.
