Deerness

Another lovely trip today, to the Deerness island. There is a great walk to the headland past cliffs with all the auks nesting. Some great views of Shag nests too. See extra.
We crossed over the Churchill Barriers to get there. These were built to guard the British navy in its base in Scapa Flow, and are now used as road links between the islands. We saw several of the scuppered hulks of German warships as we crossed, a poignant reminder of those terrible times. See extra.
