Green orchid buds and leaves

We have a total of three cymbidium orchid spikes, some others already lost to a creature, probably an insect like a grown up katydid, who munches them off at the stalk. It appears to be mindless vandalism. The Resident Gardener has put some white powdery stuff all around which we hope will deter the destroyer.
