Sally Mair - Loving life

By Sallymair

Is it a bird...? Is it a plane...?

......No, it's somebody's extremely large birthday balloon flying off to pollute the seas! Grrrrr.
At the time I spotted this I had just collapsed flat on my back on the grass exhausted after working in the garden all day, it wasn't till I put my glasses on that I realised that the strange blob I could see high above me was neither of the first two options, it was an enormous figure 2 twirling and spinning very high above my head. (No sniggers about big number two's now please!)
What a beautiful day it's been, the thermometer was still reading 25° when we were eating our dinner out in the garden after 7pm this evening. I can do this :-)) it's not quite Greece orTurkey but it's pretty good!
The day started well when our neighbour from across the private lane behind our house, (to which we have no access) arrived with our enormous missing parcel. It had been dumped at the end of the back lane, against our back garden wall. We don't have a way into the lane and it is off two roads, neither of which has remotely the same name as our address. SatNavs have a lot to answer for. Still she was very nice and I hadn't met her before. A complaint has been made to the supplier to take up with Yodel. When she first saw the parcel on Saturday morning, she thought it had been fly tipped so we're lucky she examined it properly today. It had literally been dumped, no attempt at delivery to our house.
After a coffee to relax a bit and stop fizzing, I told myself that at least I now had the package and a 10% discount of my next order as an apology.

I started off in the garden in a small way today. I tied up the Dicentra which had sprawled then made a frame for the beans and peas. Next I started small weeding the borders with my hand fork - my weapon of choice. As I worked my way along I remembered I had been going to put weed fabric covered with bark in an inaccessible corner under the lilac and wisteria. Time for a quick trip to Homebase to pick up the fabric. I spent the next several hours crawling into corners with the fabric and weighing it down with rocks. It was only about two metres square, but on different levels and lots of plants to dodge around. I used all three of the bags of bark I bought last week. I still need a little more, but it looks much better now and hopefully will remove the need to crawl under bushes to weed in future years.
I was amused that twice while in the lilac bush (yes, really, in) a dunnock flew right in beside me then straight back out again, when it realised I was there. Still in the bush, the next visitor was my neighbour from across the road come over to apologise about the burglar alarm incident. Colin had said I was in the garden and she couldn't see me at all. We had a good laugh about it all once I popped my head up and then got myself out of the bush.
Daddy wood pigeon was in charge today and was teaching his two youngsters skills in flying and landing. It was hilarious to watch, one of the babies flew into a bush and kept on going, missing the branch it had been aiming for completely, it pulled itself out, squeaking indignantly all the while and tried to smooth its ruffled feathers. Daddy pigeon meanwhile had settled on the bird feeder and was tucking in to the peanuts, oblivious to his child care failings. The other youngster was trying to stay more or less balanced on the fence. Kept me amused for ages watching them.
I do hope the weather is as good tomorrow I'm going to have to go back into that corner with some more forest bark. It would be nice to finish the job then I can get on with some more weeding .... Joy!
Keep safe and well everybody, I'm glad, at least, that although the numbers are going up people seem to be avoiding the need to be in hospital. Long may it continue.
