After spending ages throwing stuff on the fire to get smoke, rushing outside with the camera and seeing nothing I resorted to cheating. This is condensation. But it looks like smoke - a bit.

Hope the lads in the conclave have got some decent coal, this smokeless stuff is no good for sending messages.
