V and E
Much of yesterday's snow has melted overnight but it still provides good contrast on the South Downs where a large V shape is visible (centre left of the silver birch). These trees - on Streat Hill - were planted to mark Queen Victoria's Jubilee in 1897. The Scouts planted 3,060 trees at a cost of 12 pounds, 10 shillings and four pence. Apparently a giant E has now been cut further east, above Firle, to commemorate the current Queen's Diamond Jubilee. I haven't seen it yet. Rather than plant trees in the shape of an E scrub and woodland has been cleared to reveal an E made up of untouched trees. To be 'opened' by a member of the Royal family in the spring.
