Cockchafer

Also known as the May bug, we have seen an unusual number of these amazing mini-beasties. Invariably they are lying on their backs waving their legs in the air. I usually turn them over, but recently one turned itself over with no trouble, as if it was scratching its wing casings. I wonder whether what looks like brown dust on the casings is actually some teeny mite…. Next time I’ll get a magnifying glass out. They are really huge this year. Took me about 15 shots to get this pic.
