Tiananmen

Today is the 32nd anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, when soldiers of the People’s Liberation Army forcibly put down student protests, and hundreds or thousands died. Who doesn’t remember the image of the man who stood in front of the tanks?

Until two years ago, a candlelight vigil was held every year in Hong Kong to commemorate the anniversary. The vigils are now banned, ostensibly because of Covid.

The photo was taken on our wonderful trip to China in 2007. As the extra suggests, Beijing was preparing for the 2008 Olympics and there was lots of repainting and refurbishing going on.
