South Western House
My drive to Hampshire today included a visit to mum and a quick trip to Southampton.
This Grade II Listed building was built in 1865 and named the Imperial hotel. It was built adjacent to the railway terminus building and the platforms originally came right into the hotel for passengers to alight.
It later became the South Western Hotel where first class passengers spent their last night before boarding the ill-fated Titanic the following day.
During WWII it was taken over by the military and became HMS Shrapnel - a training centre, and also played a significant role in the planning of D-Day.
The BBC used the building for 30 years, broadcasting their South Today TV programme from there.
It is now converted into apartments.
A very impressive building with a very impressive history.
