"Nothing is a waste of time if you use the experience wisely."
Auguste Rodin

Brave soul that I am I thought we'd escape the bank holiday crowds and head for the waterfalls in the hills at Ystradfellte, oops. Road works on the Heads of the Valleys above Merthyr meant a detour through Dowlais, followed by a crawl to Hirwaun. Undeterred I pressed on, the traffic would ease once we got off the main road, oops again. Stopped for an ice-cream at the junction for the road to Ystradfellte. "Where are you going?" asked the ice-cream seller. "Ystradfellte" said K1. "Ooh, I don't think so..." came the reply. He told us he'd seen hundreds of cars pass that way, and the numbers coming back indicated to him the place was already packed to overflowing. So he suggested parking up to enjoy our ice-cream and taking a stroll on the hillside above. We did, the views from the old quarry were something, from Pen-y-Fan down to the Carmarthen Fans. Walking back to the car we saw a steady stream of cars on the Ystradfellte road - which was closed by a Ranger's car across the junction. We took the scenic route home via Brecon.
