The skeletal remains of eight old fishing boats dating from the late 19th to the early 20th century are visible when the tide is out on the intertidal mudflats near Kilspindie on the foreshore of Aberlady Bay.   As they are rare examples of the types of fishing boats that were very common at one time they have been designated as a Scheduled Monument.  It seems hardly believable now that for hundreds of years Aberlady was an important port with fairly large ships able to anchor but its importance declined with the advent of the railways and the silting up of the bay.  Now it is an important area for birds especially with the thousands of geese which visit in autumn.  More information about each of the wrecked boats is here.
