Mother Shipton
Rob Pepper and I met up with Lynne to walk her Wakebarrow butterfly transect on Whitbarrow. It was the most beautiful weather, around 24C with plenty of butterflies. We saw this Mother Shipton moth which obligingly sat still for a photo.
The pattern on the forewing resembles an iconic engraving of Ursula Southeil, also known as Mother Shipton, a 16C prophetess and witch. She supposedly foretold the death of Cardinal Wolsey in 1530, carriages without horses, and airplanes. Also, the end of the world in 1880 so she missed out on that one!
We also saw a couple of the rare Duke of Burgundy butterflies see extra so it was an excellent afternoon.
