Clock stories
Clock stories are legion, especially the clock which stops "never to go again when the old man dies". I have heard this one so many times from customers that I am beginning to think there must be something in it. A colleague repairer told me a stranger tale of a wall clock that was brought in by a lady whose husband was sick. None of the repairers could find the fault so it was hung on the wall for attention at a later date. The lady returned asking for the clock back saying that there was no need to repair the clock as her husband had died and it was to have been a present for him. My colleague went to the back room to collect the clock, only to find it going. Everyone in the workshop swore they had not given it any further attention!!
I went to visit a customer today and repaired this fine, large wall clock originally from Walton Gaol in Liverpool. Apparently, it had been bought from an antique dealer by an ex-con who wanted to send it to his trial judge to make him forever remember the time he had made him do. The criminal's wife was incensed at the amount he had paid to make this gesture and insisted he return it to the dealer. The current owner bought it from the same dealer.
