OVER THE HUMBER

HUMBER VIEW
The River Humber is a vast and powerful river leading to the North Sea. With swirling strong tides and ever-shifting sandbanks it is a real challenge to navigate and cross.
On a stormy day, with dark snow clouds one minute and bright sunshine the next, it looks even more impressive as a river not to be messed with.

This is The Humber Bridge, Kingston-upon-Hull UK, first opened to traffic on 24th June 1981. Approval for a suspension bridge was granted in 1959, but it was not until 1973 that work finally began. A suspension bridge, with no centre support piers, would not obstruct the estuary or be effected by the shifting sands.

It may have taken a long time but the good news is that the fee to use this bridge has recently been halved to boost traffic numbers.

Ideas for crossing the Humber have been around for over 100 years. To find out more, please click here.
