The Portuguese synagogue, Lower East Side

Founded in 1886 by Portuguese Jews, this lovely old synagogue is now boarded up. It’s not clear whether the closure is temporary or permanent, but I’m pretty sure if it reopens will have to be with some other function, because there are no longer enough religious Jews on the Lower East Side to supply the necessary numbers for a temple of this size.
