With all the recent damp and dull weather the Star of Bethlehem  (Ornithogalum umbellatum)  has lived up to one of its folk names of Eleven-o'clock lady or Nap-at-noon.  The petals usually stay closed until the afternoon and stays closed on cloudy days so this afternoon’s sunshine brought out the flowers.   It is most probably a garden escape but this is growing in a little copse.  According to legend, after the Star had guided the three wise men to see the baby Jesus in Bethlehem, God thought the Star was too beautiful to banish from the earth.  So the star split into thousands of pieces and when they fell to the ground grew as star shaped flowers to guide Mary and Joseph on their way.
