"Pooh bear takes care of his tummy"
I found this article almost a year ago now in a science magazine (what a sad life I lead I know!) however it actually turned out to be a very interesting read!
The author talks about examining a patient under the watchful eye of her mentor during her training. The patient required gallbladder surgery so was undergoing a routine examination of his tummy. As she describes the situation and how the surgeon split the abdomen of the patient into an invisible noughts and crosses board to make examination easier, she points out how there is not one part of the body without a name! And this is the point in the article where I became interested...
Did you know the crook of your elbow is actually called your 'antecubital fossa' and the space behind your knee is the 'popliteal fossa'?! Or how about the drop of tissue that dangles at the back of your throat being called the uvula - or little grape, not the epiglottis as it is commonly confused with - this is found further down the windpipe. And what about the area between your eyebrows.....the glabella!! You can no doubt see how this article caught my imagination - especially during what was dissertation time!
She goes on to explain how the abdomen is divided into more accurate quadrants, with the 'right iliac fossa' being the quadrant where the appendix is located! So if you ever have severe RIF pain - panic!! And she was also quick to point out that when someone complains of stomach cramps, the cramps are nowhere near the actual stomach and they are more likely to be bowel related!!
How amazing is the human body! Full of both useless, useful and interesting information! Don't ever say that my blip journal isn't informative! If you've stayed with me to this point, you're practically a doctor already!! haha!
O, and did you know the small half-moon shape visible on your fingernail is called a lunula?!!! :)
