The tree peony (which I'd completely forgotten I'd bought, and which arrived - wrapped in moss - last week) is having a little pause.

That's because Spring is having a little pause too.

I think March is supposed to have a little edginess to it, a little bite. I think it should play with our hair, tickle our ears and then turn on us suddenly, nip at our nose, slap our cheeks and shout "BOO!" in our face. We should never take Spring for granted. Its progress was never meant to be smooth. It's meant to wake us up, make sure we are ready and stop us from getting too relaxed. March is Spring's bastard child.

I've also been having a pause in my progress. I need to wait for some cold air to clear.
The sting of an unexpected icy slap is still burning, so I'm blowing on my hands, stamping my feet and waiting for my eyes to stop watering.

It's a bit startling when you think you know what's what and in what direction you're going only to find you should have been more prepared.

They say what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, but I think that should be: What doesn't get killed off in nature leaves what is strong. Humans are different. WE've learnt to keep damaged humans alive.

If you're a human, what doesn't kill you might leave you stronger in some ways but it can also leave you troubled, hurt, damaged, bitter, bent, broken, weak...

Human beings are so complicated, too clever for their own good that I think it is impossible to say what state you are really in. Those who think they are strong might actually be weak and incredibly damaged.

We have a spirit that needs encouragement - not just from the sun and the elements but from other humans. They don't always react the way we expect them to or want them to and it can floor us.

You can't just bounce back. A little of everything gets absorbed.

Unless you are Tigger.
