As good as Bluebells?

Ramsons, Wild Garlic  (Allium ursinum).

Now at their best. In my view they are as fine a sight as a Bluebell wood. And certainly easier to photograph.

There are many local names such as Stink bombs, Stinking onions and Londoner’s lilies.

Many place names derive from this plant. These include  Ramsey Island in Pembrokeshire and Ramsbottom in Lancashire.

It is said that the odour is such that if you come home after walking in a wood full of Ramsons your family will know where you have been.

Despite the strong smell Ramsons are mild to eat. The leaf blades are used in salads, stews and soups.

My photo shows only a very small part of this local woodland. At this time of year it is a magical place for a walk.
