Big day out
Just back from a big day out! After two days of gales and rain, the wind dropped the sun came out, we packed a picnic, mac and wellies and headed off to the Beara - the peninsula above us. It is bigger, wilder, more rugged and was looking utterly beautiful. We saw many wonders including a wayside shrine to the BVM, three holy wells (one new one which I had to actually climb down into), an ancient church its graveyard full of wildflowers, and the Hag of Beara- a strange erratic perched overlooking the sea full of myth and folklore, and covered in offerings. We wandered around Eyeries in search of a coffee - officially the most colourful village in Ireland and it was delightful. Whilst there we popped into the church to admire the George Walsh stained glass windows which we had never seen before i n the flesh. They are absolutely stunning, riotous colours and full of wonderful details, worth biggifying. There's a farming theme going on in this panel. We couldn't linger as a small wedding party was making its way in.
On to Ardgroom, with possibly even wilder colours, and a magnum ice cream. Behind one of the old houses was a tiny paddock containing a large and inquisitive cow. I only realised as I walked away that there was a teeny calf sleeping near a discarded tractor tyre.
We decided to carry on and do the full Ring of Beara, ending up in Kenmare where I rushed into Fat Face to treat myself to some new knickers! Since Brexit you can no longer order stuff online from FF, just saying.
Back home over the Caha Pass and more stunning views. I fear I might cheat tomorrow for I have some wonderful colourful dereliction which may have to be displayed.
