This is the claim of the local authority in Bexhill. It started in 1902 with an event watched by 30,000 spectators, lining the the straight mile course from the far end of the promenade. It must have been quite a sight - hugely powerful machines roaring down the ash surfaced prom on skinny, totally inadequate tyres. I don't think I'd have been standing too close.
