Kimmeridge Bay

Kimmeridge Bay with Clave Tower beyond. Dorset, UK.

Today was the big day: Ton, Herman and me were going to Dorset for David Noton's Jurassic Coast Photography Workshop! I got up even earlier than normal, so I could pick up Ton at 5.15 and Herman at 6.00. Then we drove to Schiphol (Amsterdam Airport) for our flight to Bristol. Everything seemed to go just fine, until I noticed a suitcase looking suspiciously similar to Ton's being driven away from the plane. And indeed, when we arrived in Bristol my bag was there, Herman's bag was there but not Ton's. Fortunately we all took our camera gear as carry on luggage, so we all still had our cameras and lenses. Still, without tripod, walking boots and clothes it was a bad start for Ton. After filling out the necessary paper work, we picked up our rental car. It had quite a bit of damage that wasn't marked on the form as known damage, so we had to wait to get that registered as well. All in all, we had quite a delay.

Herman was driving and I took the opportunity to give David Noton a call to explain the situation and informing him we would be somewhat later. David and his wife Wendy immediately helped out by arranging a tripod for Ton to use during the weekend and offering to go shopping for him. How great is that?

After arriving at the hotel in Wareham, we checked in and joined the others in the lounge. Then it was time for the first shoot of the weekend: the sunset at Kimmeridge Bay. It was great to be out there, even though the weather conditions were not that good: quite a bit of sea fog and therefore low visibility. When the fog lifted for a moment and a bit of blue was visible in the sky, I managed to get this shot. This isn't award-winning stuff, but it's good to have some exposures and after returning home, I processed it using some of the new techniques I learned and here it is.

We finished the day with drinks, dinner and then a tutorial on exposure, followed by a slide show of David's recent trip to Burma. Amazing work and a great end to a long day.
