On the Solway

How could I not buy this when I spotted it at Bookends last week! And Gordon was delighted with it, as it reminded him of when he was living in Silloth as a child. He remembered the trains coming in from Carlisle and lots of visitors crowding the streets.

Silloth was the traditional holiday/day trip destination for people of Carlisle and surrounding areas. There are a few Blippers who remember being taken when they were young and it is surprising how many people we have met over the years (you know when we used to meet people!) who know of Silloth and have spent holidays there. It has been calculated that the population of Silloth used to triple during the holiday season. The town is still a holiday destination and has several caravan sites, but the Railway was closed in 1964.

Gordon was interested in the activities pictured on the poster. Of course it is famed for its golf course. His father was a keen, and very good, golfer and his two brothers played as well. Gordon has played, but he was too busy playing Rugby and Cricket to take it seriously.

Of course there is always a blue sky in Silloth!!
