Fire Insurance

Rather than a sentimental blip of flowers on Mother's Day, I've gone for this Fire Insurance Mark on the front of my Mom's house - so there is a mother's day link!

These marks were used in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Each insurance company had it's own fire brigade and they attended buildings that displayed the company's mark. They might still put your fire out, even if you didn't display an insurace mark, but for a retrospective (and no doubt higher!) fee.
