Stunning Knaresborough ...
Knaresborough; “knarre” meaning rocky outcrop in Anglo-Saxon, and “burgh” meaning fortress. Originally, Knaresborough was simply the “fortress on the rock”. It’s in a gorge of the River Nidd.
Knaresborough is famous for many things, including the notorious occupants of Knaresborough Castle, Hugh de Moreville and his three fellow assassins, Reginald Fitzurse, William de Tracy and Richard le Bret, the murderers of Thomas Becket. After they had committed murder they fled north and barricaded themselves into Knaresborough Castle, where they lived for a year.
It’s also famous for;
Old Mother Shipton & the petrifying well
St Robert’s Cave
Black and white chequerboard houses
Painted windows
The annual bed race
Bebra Gardens
Drakes fish & chips
The duck race
Rowing boats (see extra)
The tug of war
The Castle
....... and so much more!
It’s a great place.
