Caterpillar (on the trail of death!)

This startling caterpillar, unknown to me, was heading across the cycle pavement on to the A770 road. Until a chivalrous man on a bicycle stopped a shepherded it into the nearby undergrowth.

Still searching the web to learn into what it will metamorphose??
