#10 'A history of Chailey in 50 images'
The tenth image in the weekly series and still in the photographically challenging medieval period. The chancel of St Peter's church dates from the early 13th century. It has three narrow lancet windows on each side. The shafts either side of these windows have carved capitals with a floral design except two. On one the capital is carved in the form of entwined serpents biting each other. The other has a 'Green Man' - a face peering through the foliage with branches growing from his mouth. This Green man is thought to date from the middle of the 13th century. It is a common theme in medieval art, reflecting the earlier pagan belief that trees and plants were inhabited by spirits.
