Newstead Abbey
FRIDAY
I had a day's leave and it was also Harriet's day off so we all met up at Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire - an Augustinian priory, converted to a domestic home following the Dissolution of the Monasteries and is best known as the ancestral home of Lord Byron.
It was good value. Car parking was £6 which included admission to the grounds. The house itself is currently closed (due to Covid regulations) but the cafe and toilets were open. The food was nice and the sun was shining and we had a really good afternoon. Lots of birds in the grounds - pea fowl, various ducks, geese, goslings, swans (including a black swan), coots and moorhens.
The gardens were nice and quiet although this might change at the weekend as there is a funfair in the grounds from tomorrow.
