Tulip mania

Tulip mania was a period during the Dutch Golden Age when prices for bulbs of the recently introduced and highly fashionable tulip reached extraordinarily high levels, and then dramatically collapsed in February 1637.
A tulip, known as "the Viceroy", appeared in the 1637 Dutch catalog Verzameling van een Meenigte Tulipaanen. A single bulb was offered for sale for between 3,000 and 4,200 guilders (florins) depending on its weight. A skilled craftsman at the time earned only about 300 guilders a year.
