Poor Choice
Whoever took this photo was probably making a poor choice. Hopefully this was just a quick snapshot and they were actually paying more attention to the road than it appears, especially because it looks like it's raining.
My commute is not so bad, but honestly it's not the best either. The worst was probably when I lived in DC and had a very long subway ride which included transferring at Union Station during rush hour. The best had to be when I lived in Vermont and just had to walk out of the house and bam! there I was at work in the Green Mtn National Forest. Maybe that doesn't count. Taking the ferry to Swans Island every day was neat so that must rate high on the list.
It's hard to say if this commute is worse than going between Blue Hill and Deer Isle. That trip was more scenic, but it was longer. I think the fact that my daughter was younger made it seem worse, since it was a drag to get home so late when she was young. This ride is a bit shorter, but once you leave the island it's sorta plain.
I guess as I think about it the problem is really just cars. I don't really like them, and if there was a convenient bus into work I might prefer to go that way. Maybe it would be different if I had a car that could be relied upon to actually work without stuffing it full of money. Or slowly warming the planet.
But I've got to keep telling myself not to gripe when I've got it good. I could be back riding the bus with crutches and a cast all down my leg. Then again, I could be walking through downtown late a night in the wintertime, hoofing it home for over an hour rather than standing around waiting for the bus on some deserted corner. But I actually rather liked that.
