Wubba Lubba Dub-Dub
My Dear Princess, Loulou and Fellows,
Bumpaddle Day 3 began with Rick and Morty.
I have been aware of this cartoon for a while now. Mainly from the merchandise. Lemon used to come to work wearing her Rick and Morty tights. Her daughter was appalled.
"But why?" said Lemon. "They make me laugh. I love the expression on Morty's face, stretched over my bum."
Gromit, meanwhile, has a Rick and Morty lanyard. And invited me to join she and Ellie in a Rick and Morty trivia game before learning I had never seen A SINGLE EPISODE. She has seen them all. Several times.
So frequently, Gromit team meetings were broken up by references to "Morty Lips" or "Pickle Rick".
What can I say? FOMO kicked in.
To be honest, I did not care for the first episode. But as I was on the train when I saw it, and had nothing much else to do, and wasn't even halfway home yet, I persevered.
And now, the commute is my favourite part of the work day. I can't wait for the train to arrive so I can see what they've been up to.
If you have never seen it, Rick is an obnoxious, unreliable, self-obsessed genius with a portal gun that allows him to traverse alternate universes and have adventures. Morty is his extremely worried grandson, who Rick drags out of school to help him.
I suppose it's a bit like Dr. Who, but if Dr. Who was addicted to cocaine and bought his assistants sex robots.
(The episode where Morty gets his sex robot pregnant contained a fart joke that made me laugh out loud on the train).
So now I'm averaging about four episodes a day and have very much enjoyed:
- The bit where the dog develops sentience and wakes up Morty's sister in the middle of the night with the chilling line, "Where are my testicles, Summer?"
- The bit where Rick and Morty chase through an alternate universe where pizzas sitting in chairs order people via the phone; then another universe where chairs sit on people and order phones via the pizza.
- The bit where Rick accidentally turns the entire town into rabid sex-monsters who want to mate with Morty and then eat his head.
- The bit where Morty saves Rick and is very happy about it, which prompts Rick to respond with, "Don't break your arm jerking yourself off back there"*.
I'm enjoying it so much that I even watched it on telly this morning before I went to work. And I thought I should tell you about it.
But I'm not sure if I have sold the show to you or not. I can see that it is not for everyone.
All I know is this: it is only Bumpaddle Day 3 and I need a high point for my day.
