My sister has given me a lovely booklet entitled A Taste Of Essex, Traditional Local Recipes from The Cottage Homes of England. There is a recipe in it for the onion pudding that my granny used to make for us when I was a child. I'd completely forgotten about it.
Today I have baked Southend Fruit Shells as a Mothering Sunday gift for my mother. I had trouble turning the sponge out of the scallop shells so slightly modified the recipe. When I was clearing up a reject came out cleanly. It looks like an overgrown madelaine evoking Proust's Remembrance Of Things Past.
