Boring brown Dunnock
Also known as a Hedge Sparrow, the average lifespan of a Dunnock is 2 years. It is a small bird, about the size of a robin, and is generally quiet and unobtrusive. The most interesting fact about the Dunnock is its behaviour during the mating season: two (or sometimes three). males share the same female with the female actively chasing the males for some fun behind the bike shed. This way the male birds will protect the territory and feed the young not knowing which male the offspring belong to. In a situation where food might be difficult to find, the help of an extra male or two could be a significant boost to the female chicks' chances of survival. Go Girl!
