The Last Post
With possible showers forecast for later on, I thought I should finish ripping up the old decking whilst it stayed dry.
As previously, the advanced rot meant that most of the remaining boards just came away with a swift tug, and only a few needed the judicious application of a crowbar to ease their departure. I’ve even piled them all up on the drive to make removal to the tip easier.
By the time all the boards had been removed and the weeds/fern roots dug out of the base, this post was the last bit to remove. And it seems that the aforesaid boards and weeds were what had been holding it up, because only a very light application of the boot was required to topple it!
I’ve left the base in place in case the landscaper needs to use it as reference for the new one - and because I really can’t be bothered digging around in the mud, if I’m being honest.
Hopefully work will begin on the new deck on Friday, and there won’t be any hidden horrors lurking deep underground that could put a spanner in the works. The new base will be larger in area and made of bigger timbers, so it’s not a given that it will slip easily into place.
And once the new deck is down, I’m hoping it will provide the impetus to get all the jobs done on the house this year. Time to phone the joiner and get him warming up on the touchline...
