Marina: whaling wall.
A peculiar feature of the marina is this structure, a gas fired power plant built (in 1954) on the coast in order to release excess hot water into the bay. Although Redondo Beach had shipping in the early 1900s, this marina break water was built beginning in 1954, after the plant. Wyland was hired to paint one of his whaling murals on the walls of the plant, perhaps in order to camouflage the plant! It continues to operate on an as needed basis, but is scheduled to be decommissioned in 2021.
