Pilgrim rounding Berry Head
We spent the day walking from Churston to Berry Head, Brixham, and back. After a very cold start it warmed up nicely. It was Earth Day. At Churston Cove which has some of the clearest bluest waters in the bay, and regular seals, an empty 20 litre drum of marine paint was just being washed in. We rescued that. In the harbour the corpse of a black backed gull was wrapped in fishing wire. On then to Berry Head were we had the quarry to ourselves apart from a lone fisherman who had found a dry space between some crashing waves. We spent some time watching a kestrel on a nest high up the quarry wall. Then Pilgrim appeared, the oldest of the Brixham Heritage Fleet taking an adventurous few on a £115 a day sailing experience. Good value I reckon but I would need to test my sea legs first, otherwise it might be an ordeal. Great sailing weather. We took our time walking back, savouring a good day to be on earth, arriving just before the sun went down over the yard arm.
Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 every year. The day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.
The day inspires us to act towards the protection of the environment and focus on the need for conservation.
The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22 in 1970. It became a topic of discussion after more than 20 million Americans took to the streets to protest against environmental ignorance by the government. Since then, it has been an annual event.
