‘Relics of War’
Large numbers of these stumps are still on view throughout the country, relics of what proved to be a rather pointless attempt to contribute to the war effort over 80 years ago.
Not entirely pointless, perhaps, since while most of the railings removed were never used, for a variety of reasons, the exercise did contribute to national morale.
Many of the stumps have been long hidden by hedges, and many others have been removed over the years. However, they still adorn this front garden wall in Edinburgh that I walked past today.
