Carolina

Yesterday was one of the greyest days we have ever spent in Madeira, with gales and rain, murky seas and dark clouds but it turned out to be the brightest ever because of Carolina. Out of the storm and rain we stumbled into her restaurant for a bit of respite. All we wanted was two coffees, but she cleared a fully set table and welcomed us with the broadest smile. We told her the weather was no problem as we were soon on our way to the sun in Malawi. Mary told her about the preschools and we found out that she, as a mother, is in University doing a teacher training course. She was instantly interested in the kids and said she had some pencils and pens to send out, showing the most genuine empathy for the cause. Her wonderful insights into Aid and her interest in our approach was uplifting and fascinating. She has just as warm a heart as Malawian women where we call it the Warm Heart of Africa. In that short period the Universe colluded once again with the most real of connections. The gale blew us up the hill, but more like we were walking on air. Amazing people are everywhere to be found.
This evening we were back for a real Maderian meal, grilled prawns to die for, scabbard fish and local veggies simply cooked and delicious. The tastes were WOW. The place was buzzing and if you ever go to Funchal, head straight for Restaurante DOCA Do CAVACAS. It is a truly amazing place and a unique experience, for the food, the panoramic views in this circular room and of course the people..

You know a reasonably priced seafood restaurant is good when local fishermen eat there. Doca do Cavacas is perched right on the edge of the sea, along the next bay round the coast from Funchal. It serves some of the freshest and best fish in town with a panoramic view of the water. Sample the espada (the deep-sea-dwelling scabbard fish) served with plantain and mango.
