Threlkeld Bridge.

Kanyl and I were out for a walk near the old Penrith to Keswick railway line.  By deviating off the track and "crammling" down a bank I got an uninterrupted view of the bridge over the "old road".

Back in  the 1960s all the traffic into the west of the county travelled along the A594, none of which was dualled.  During the 70s th A66 was created by bypassing Penrith and Keswick and then filling in the gaps.  It never fails to amaze me when I see bridges like this to think of the traffic they carried.

For those not familiar with road naming in the UK having a road numbered A66 in Cumbria is an anomaly.   The main roads are numbered (or were) clockwise round the country.  All A roads in the segment between two numbers would start with the number of the main road to the left.   For example the A5 runs out of England and up to Anglesey.  The A6 runs north south.  So all roads between the A5 and the A6 start with the number 5.  Well all that is apart from the A66 which should stop being the A66 at Kemplay roundabout on the A6.
