LET SLEEPING ELEPHANTS LIE

It was such a lovely morning and I wanted to go out.  Hubby wanted to get on with decorating the hall and likes me out of the way then.  G wanted to watch a film so I headed off on my own for some further investigations.

I am falling in love with The Howgills, it such a beautiful tranquil unspoilt area and I want to explore more.  It is uncommercialised which I personally prefer.  However the commercialism of The Lakes isn't far away when you need that too. 

I have now ordered an OS map for that area so when I eventually persuade Hubby to come with me with can go for some walks - I just need to pick the ones I can do.

The title is because if you look at The Howgills froom certain angles, and this can be seen from the M6 heading north, they look like a herd of elephants lying down.

This time I headed to Newbiggin-on-the-Lune on the A684 heading towards Kirkby Stephen.  I turned left at Newbiggin and joined a B road to drive above the A685 with some glorious views and through a small village/hamlet called Kelleth and then rejoined the A685 again.  I only saw two cyclists and one young family of 4 out walking.  I pulled into a couple of places, took a short walk along the River Lune and enjoyed the warm sunshine - no coat required.  

I've seen signs for Great Asby which looks worthwhile exploring too but I don't know how narrow the roads are.  Once upon a time I would have loved going down unchartered roads but I just don't feel confident to do that any more, weird really!!!!

On the way back I drove along the A685 through Tebay village this time and along that area and into Kendal.  I have noted a few places worth further exploration and I stopped off in the layby above the M6 (see the collage in extras) where you can get a lovely view of Sweetheart Woods.  

It felt strange driving through Kendal, well the top part of Kendal as I went up Windermere Road to join the A6 before heading back home.  A lot of people at Sizergh Farm sitting on the picnic tables enjoying their takeaways.  I do miss visiting Sizergh Farm for their gorgeous quiches.  

Grange was very busy when I got home, well for Grange so I guess The Prom would be busy so I've stayed away.  It's good to see people out enjoying themselves though, and from what I could see most were adhering to social  distancing,  which is great.

All in all in lovely morning out.  Just a little bit of walking but discovering places I haven't explored too much yet.
