Gathering of furious mothers
About sixty mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers whose offspring have been killed by police gathered in Portland on Saturday to strategize ways to press for an end to (or at least diminishing) police violence. They had a rally, a vigil, a march, and some meetings. I was present to help document all but the meetings. It was the busiest I've been in over a year, and it felt wonderful to be part the work of justice again, although it was emotionally exhausting. Each story, each death, is the end of a world, a wound for the family that never heals. Coming together for the support of others who have experienced that trauma seems to be helpful for those who were able to join the gathering. I hope their strategy sessions lead to change.
