BEWARE QE
Today is WORLD BOOK DAY - every child in the UK gets a book voucher today to encourage them to read more.
So which book should I focus on ? The answer came from my morning stroll.
The mist is lifting slowly along the coast - and there amongst the trees - a deep orange glow. Almost pulsing and growing by the minute I wondered if the Quatermass Experiment (QE) had escaped after a long hibernation.
QE was broadcast on TV in 1953 and published as a book later. It is the SciFi story of the first manned flight into space, supervised by Professor Bernard Quatermass. When the spaceship returns to Earth, two of the three astronauts are missing and the third is behaving strangely. An alien presence entered the ship and Quatermass and his fellow scientists must prevent the alien from destroying the world. Time to hide behind the sofa !
In reality this bright orange mess turns out to be a Slime Mould. They eat decaying vegetation, bacteria and fungi and are most commonly found in forest.
Unlike fungi, they can move and their cell membranes are made of different stuff. There are more than 900 species of slime mould all over the world.
No enhancements were used in producing this image - it really is like this.
Beware ! If I do not Blip tomorrow you know that the QE has taken over Yorkshire !
