Apples
A statue in Villaviciosa, in honour of Jose Cardín. Cardín was one of the creators of the Gaitero cider factory, that I´ve posted here before, and was and remains (through the Cardín Foundation), a significant benefactor to the town. Apples, through their cultivation and then their conversion to cider, were fundamental to his contribution. The statue shows apples rolling out of a trilby hat.
The statue was created by Eduardo Úrculo under the title of "The Exaltation of the Apple", but is widely known locally as "the apples of Urculo".
A titbit: I did not know till fairly recently that a "manzana" can translate as either an apple or as a block - as in "walk round the block" or "the other side of the block". So whoever first called New York "la Gran Manzana" may have meant "the big block" in reference to it´s grid pattern and not meant The Big Apple at all.
There´s a different angle of the statue on Pinterest here: https://www.pinterest.es/pin/444237950716489245/
And by special request, a view of the inside of a cake shop (where, to be fair apples and almonds, both locally produced, are regular ingredients) in the extra.
