Cartoon Crabs
I was in Sheringham this morning for a dental check-up (they've only just starting after a year of not doing them). It must be the quickest I've ever had, the check up inspection only lasted a minute, plus a few questions and observations for another minute! A local artist has done a few murals in Sheringham and West Runton and I spotted this one on a gate next to the seafood shop - a nice bit of advertising. More cupboard sorting this afternoon and a Sainsbury's delivery.
Day 387 / Day 92 of Lockdown 3 / Day 31 of Step 1 of Roadmap Easing (for my record only)
UK deaths up 45 to 126,927 (revised basis), with 2,763 new cases, 3,536 patients in hospital, 469 on ventilation and 256 new admissions. Brazil had more than 4k deaths for the first time yesterday and India has 115k new cases. 31.7m have now received their first dose of the vaccine and 5.7m have had their second dose. The JCVI has advised that people aged 18-29 will be offered an alternative to the AZ vaccine after 79 people have now developed blood clots (up to 31/3) within days of getting the jab (51 women and 28 men), including 19 deaths (3 under 30). In context, over 20m people have been given the AZ vaccine in the UK, so it's a very tiny risk of c4 per million getting blood clots (it's probably more risky to travel to the vaccination centre). The EMA says that 'unusual blood clots' should be listed as a 'very rare' side-effect of the AZ vaccine. It's good to see regulators doing their job and amending controls proportionately to the risk, although I am concerned that the numbers reported were only 30 on 2nd Apr (to 21st Mar) and 5 or 6 before then - so the numbers don't make sense and it was definitely Europe flagging concerns first - so were we slow to pick up on this or were we downplaying it? AZ is to amend product info and is working with the regulators to do this. JVT says the vaccine rollout should not be affected. The first dose of the Moderna mRNA vaccine was given today in the UK. Researchers at the University of Oxford have found that those who've had Covid-19 have an increased risk of developing mental health and neurological conditions in the 6 months after a diagnosis.
