Three Pikes

We left a village full of visitors and drove out on back roads for 10 minutes to walk along the valley below Knock Pike. There wasn't a soul around and yet it it is a lovely footpath below the hills.

In the photo you can see Murton Pike in the far distance, our own Dufton Pike next and then the slopes of Knock Pike which the track skirts. You might spot Gordon, who had set off up Knock Pike, but turned back as he realised the top was further than he had thought.

The indents and stonework further along the track are the remains of Knock Quarry. There is a geology trail that starts from here and one day we will try it out. This week we both watched a fascinating talk on the geology of the Westmorland Dales. I did not understand much of it, but it was surprising to see all the places around us that we know so well but here were being described as important geological features. Even Gordon learnt a lot and it has encouraged him to get out and do some research.

For anyone interested, the series of talks are available on the Westmorland Dales website.
