The Ingleton Branch

I'd spotted a disused railway embankment going through the fields near Friend A's house , so this weeks exploration was to see if we could get up onto it. Here we have A looking fed up because the embankment is fenced off.  Obviously a young agile thing could have scaled the fence but not my partially sighted friend. However, through the tunnel we found a gate and an obvious path.  What excitement, Its not marked as a footpath on the map but its is clearly used by locals. We walked along, high above the fields for a good half a mile. We were keen to see the bridge over the River Rawthey but - extra-  its owned by British Gas with very clear Keep Out signs.   Internet research tells me this railway once went from Carlisle to Leeds via Sedbergh , Kirby Lonsdale and Ingleton but it closed in the late 1960s. The research reveals some viaducts and old stations hidden in the countryside so A is on for a for some more treats on my trips to take her out.
