Anna's Hummingbird Sitting on Her Nest
My neighbor noticed a hummingbird's nest in a rhododendron shrub.
She was kind enough to share her precious discovery with Kathy and I.
The hummingbird nest is easily accessible and might seem quite dangerous but for it's perfect camouflage that makes it all but invisible unless you know exactly where it is located.
We stood well back and discussed this tiny marvel and watched as she flew off to get food.
A quick peek into the open nest revealed two chicks each less than an inch (2cm) long with sealed eyes and a few wisps of feathers.
I came back an hour later to find her once again on the nest.
I feel very fortunate to see such a sight.
Hummingbird Nesting Information...
Nesting season runs October through early June. The female builds the nest, sits on the eggs and cares for the chicks without assistance from the male. A female hummingbird has four or five clutches a season. She typically lays two eggs per clutch, though not all eggs are viable and many chicks do not survive.
