Installation Destroyed

I went down by bus at 9 a.m. today to see how the installation was doing. It was mostly intact, and apparently people at the rally last night didn't get the message that the artist wanted them to take home the "oil drop" vessels and thereby dismantle the Black Snake. I made a number of photos and left about 10 a.m. I heard from others that soon after I left, the city-funded group known as "Rapid Response," which is the group that violently sweeps camps of houseless people, taking their possessions in the name of hygiene, came by with trash bins and gathered up the many vessels, breaking them as they went. The artist is not surprised, though she is sorry more people who attended the rally didn't take them home. While I was there making photos, I chose 3 more to add to the one the artist gave me yesterday. I'll make them gifts.

A journalist who was there yesterday is working on a 3-minute story about the installation that will air tonight at 7pm on a TV news station. Here's the link. Not sure if it will play outside USA.

Tomorrow Sue and I head for the beach, where there is no wifi and very little cell phone connectivity, so don't worry if this journal goes silent for a few days.
