Roman roads and railways
I have driven up the road from Devil's Bridge to Sedbergh many, many times but only recently did I realise that the turning off to Holme Open Farm is actually the continuation of the Roman Road.
I suggested to Dan that when we went out for today's drive, that we might head up that way and happily he was totally up for it!
Of course, the satisfaction of following those ancient routes is not obvious. I mean, you don't actually see any Romans or their artefacts. But there is the unusual pleasure of following a path that has been trodden for hundreds and hundreds of years.
At the farm, as the Roman Road continues north, the current road turns east, and a railway bridge takes you over the old section of line between Middleton and Sedbergh, which has also become part of history. The tracks suggest it's still in use!
