another walk with Joanna today from her little booklet of walks around Kirkmahoe. This one was to visit Duncow Common and was meant to be 3.5 miles with some uphill...however, when Joanna and I go on walks together, we always detour from the planned route and today was no exception, so we ended up walking 5.3 miles.

Our detours took us to look at: Quarrelwood, a house which had its own private (previously Cameronian)chapel attached and an interesting garden, a puddle full of leaping frogs, and this tower, called Clonfeckle Tower in the booklet. The writing above the tower door says that it was built in 1810 and dedicated to Rev Dr William Richardson, but the rest of the inscription was illegible. I've been trying to find out more about the man, and think he must be the same Rev Richardson who lived in Clonfeacle in Ireland. This political parson was also a botanist, with an interest in fiorin grass as a source of winter hay for livestock (See Here).I haven't yet established his connections with this part of Scotland.
